7 days of carefree fishing on Karlovac rivers – All inclusive
With four rivers, Karlovac County is among the most attractive fishing tourism destinations in Croatia
There is an extremely large number of fish species in the pearly clean waters of Karlovac. No matter what kind of fishing you like, there is something for everyone all year round. In addition, being by the shores or on the water, fishing relaxes and soothes. Fishing in Karlovac County is a harmony and combination of the pleasure of fishing itself and the wonderful natural environment.
Some of the fishing clubs in this area are among the oldest in Croatia; The Ogulin Sport Fishing Association was founded in 1921, the Karlovac Sports Fishing Club “Korana” in 1923, and the Dugore KŠR “Mrežnica” in 1934.
The members of these clubs take care of the protection of waters and fish stocks. They are the ones who remind visitors and fishermen to protect endangered fish species.
On Šumbar, for example, all caught carp and grass carp are returned to the water unharmed, according to the catch-release principle.
Šumbar near Karlovac is a favorite meeting place for fishermen. These lake is famous for: carp, grass carp, pike, catfish, perch, perch and a variety of white fish.
The biggest river in Karlovac, Kupa, is full of different types of fish in the wider area of the city. Anglers like to catch them from a boat because that way they can choose the best spots.
The river Dobra is mostly faster and shallower, and suitable for white fish fishing, and the best summer hunting grounds are beautiful waterfalls.
Fishing on Mrežnica is an unforgettable adventure due to the numerous waterfalls, rapids and islands, so it is necessary to pull a boat, but also step into the emerald-colored water.
An indescribable pleasure is fishing on Korana, which, like Mrežnica, abounds with white fish (tench, chub, barbel…) and pike. In the summer, they fish there for “grass”, i.e. algae scraped from the waterfall dam and released downstream.
In the vicinity of Karlovac, Draganić and Ozalj, there are quite a few ponds, gravel ponds and fish ponds (the largest being Draganićki), which are rich in a variety of fish.
In Kordun, fishing is also done on the rivers: Slunjčica, Glina, Utinja and Radonja. In the Ogulin area, apart from Dobra and Zagorska Mrežnica, fishing is carried out in Lake Sabljaci, but also in fast and clear mountain streams, which are especially abundant with trout.
There are many sellers of fishing licenses and accessories in the county, and there are many restaurants along the rivers, of course, where fish dishes dominate.
